Keynote Christopher Goffard


Christopher Goffard is a journalist, novelist, screenwriter and podcaster. A Los Angeles native, he graduated from Cornell University in 1994 with a B.A. in English. His 2007 novel Snitch Jacket was a finalist for the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best First Novel. At the Los Angeles Times, where he is a staff writer, he was part of the team that won the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service in 2011 for a series exposing corruption in the city of Bell. He has twice been a Pulitzer finalist for feature writing, as well as the winner of the Edward R. Murrow Award and the Mayborn Literary Nonfiction Award. His work appeared in the Best American Newspaper Narratives anthology five years in a row.

Goffard is a pioneer in the realm of nonfiction narrative podcasts, with nearly 100 million downloads. Rolling Stone called his 2017 show, Dirty John, one of the two greatest true-crime podcasts of all time, and he was a writer/producer on the television adaptation starring Eric Bana and Connie Britton. His other two podcasts, Detective Trapp and the Trials of Frank Carson, are currently being developed for television with his participation. His 2018 collection, Dirty John and Other True Stories of Outlaws and Outsiders, published by Simon & Schuster, collects most of his best journalism. Since 2016, he has taught part-time at the Literary Journalism Department at UC Irvine.

Keynote Kim Cross 


Kim Cross is a New York Times best-selling author and journalist known for meticulously reported narrative nonfiction based on primary sources and fact-checked by experts. Her work has been recognized in “Best of” lists by the New York Times, the Columbia Journalism Review, and Best American Sports Writing. A national champion athlete, she has competed in more than 10 sports. She teaches Feature Writing for Harvard Extension School and lives in Boise, Idaho.

Dr. Jim Cawood is a California licensed private investigator and private patrol operator, who holds Masters in Forensic Psychology and a Doctor in Psychology.  He has worked in the field of behavioral threat assessment and management for over 30 years and has been involved in more than 5000 threat assessment cases in North American, Europe, and the Far East, for businesses, universities, schools, and state and federal agencies. He currently is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Threat Assessment and Management (JTAM) for the American Psychological Association, is Vice-Chairman of the Certified Threat Manager program for the Association of Threat Assessment Professionals, and is Vice-Chairman of the Professional Certification Board for ASIS International.  He holds seven professional certifications, including CALI’s Certified Professional Investigator (CPI) and Certified Security Professional (CSP).

Anthony Hopkins, CPI has a B.S. in Administration of Criminal Justice and became  licensed as a PI in 1986. Anthony has served as chief criminal defense investigator for the Sonoma County Conflict Panel from 2009 – present and is appointed by the Sonoma County, Mendocino County and Napa Count courts.  Anthony is a graduate of Brandon Perron’s Criminal Defense Investigation Academy, which was offered through CALI Professional Development.  In addition to criminal defense, Anthony has corporate and business clients who retain him for internal investigations, AOE/COE investigations and backgrounds. Anthony served 8 years on the CALI Board of Directors as the Northbay District Director, Director-AT-Large, VP of Administrative Services and VP of Investigative Services.  Anthony is the Chair of the Certified Professional Investigator (CPI) Committee and he administers the CPI exam at the annual conference.  Anthony served as the Chair of the Professional Development Committee in which he produced 16 CALI Webinars.  He is the Chair of the CALI-PAC Committee and serves on the Governmental Affairs Committee and the Listserv moderator committee. When not avidly playing Pickleball, he can be found sampling lots of great Sonoma County wine!

After leaving the police department, Cameron graduated from the University of California, Irvine with honors and started C. Jackson Investigations, Inc. in 2005. Chris Reynolds has been licensed as a Private Investigator in the State of California since 1979. After an apprenticeship working in a small law firm, Mr. Reynolds became, at 23 years old, one of the youngest licensed private investigators in California history. 

Since 1980, Mr. Reynolds has provided investigative services to civil and criminal defense attorneys throughout the United States. Since 1984, the firm has handled over 1200 complex workplace investigations for businesses, governmental agencies, and school districts. Mr. Reynolds has worked on 15 death penalty cases and over 100 homicide matters. 

Over the course of his career, Mr. Reynolds has conducted thousands of background investigations around the world, including in-depth due diligence investigations for venture capital firms and multi-national law firms.

Mr. Reynolds has been a CALI member since 1986, served on the Board of Directors for 20 years, and is a four-term CALI President and CALI Treasurer. Mr. Reynolds has been honored by CALI with the following awards:

February 2007:  CALI Investigator of the Year Award for achievements that resulted in a dismissal and an acquittal of two defendants charged with first-degree murder (separate cases).

March 2009:  CALI Legislative Excellence Award for work performed for CALI on legislative matters impacting the industry.

June 2014:  CALI Distinguished Achievement Award (DAA) for Mr. Reynolds overall achievements with CALI and the industry. The DAA is the most prestigious and significant award a member can earn.



Keith Rohman

Keith Rohman, AWI-CH, is a recognized expert in all aspects of civil and criminal workplace and Title IX investigations. Since founding Public Interest Investigations in 1984, Rohman has investigated hundreds of high-profile cases involving board members, staff, contractors, and other stakeholders facing allegations such as embezzlement, conflicts of interest, wage and hour issues, discrimination, wrongful termination, and other serious misconduct at public agencies and private sector employers. Rohman has also conducted investigations relating to the torture of prisoners at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, and served as the federal monitor of a consent decree at the Orange County Prisons.

Frank received his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento in 1986. Shortly thereafter, he began working for a licensed private investigator and in 1992 obtained his own license. Frank specializes in criminal and civil investigations and is a certified professional investigator. Frank served as the CALI Chairman of the Board from 2010 through 2020 and currently is the Association President. He has served as the Legislative Day Chair since 2009. He is the proud recipient of the 2013 CALI Presidential Award, the 2015 Legislative Excellence Award, and in 2017, received the Distinguished Achievement Award.
